\nThe Conference was organised by the Community Languages Australia and the Ethnic Schools Association of Queensland (ESAQ). It brought together representatives from all Australian states and featured more than 16 language groups. Among the speakers were well-known scientists, linguists, the leaders of the largest and oldest ethnic Australian schools. Irina Yakimenko from Mosaica Cultural Education and Learning Centre, represented at the Conference the Russian-speaking community of Western Australia.
\nThe conference was held under the motto: “How far we’ve come, what has changed and where we are now,” referring to the state and role of Saturday and Sunday language schools. Representatives have come together to understand the dynamics and trends of such schools, their levels, problems and needs. It was amazing to be among the enthusiasts who live and breathe with this movement, understand the importance and the special position of this segment of education and cultural learning.
\nAt present times, the population of the planet is becoming increasingly bilingual. In many countries, up to 40-60% of the population are bilingual, – an important indicator that makes you wonder about many things. The society is becoming more and more culturally diverse, and we are starting to talk about a truly multicultural society. It forces us all to take into account the interests and characteristics of the culture and language of each other. Government and public organizations are assigned a special mission \u2013 to regulate and support these new processes in the best interests of the public.
\nIt is estimated that, across various Australian cities, from 15 to 45% of children and adolescents are attending language public schools on Saturdays and Sundays. This poses a question – if we do not support these schools and dissolve them – where will all these children and adolescents will be going, what will interest them in and how will they integrate?
\nDr. Roly Sussex (Emeritus professor, university of Queensland) has suggested an interesting model, based on a language – culture combination, which on the one hand, lays on the surface, but on the other – is a new concept. If one family speaks one, two or 3 languages, then it follows that cultural and educational particulars in such family are quite different. Thus, one component of the model being a choice of language (1, 2 or 3 languages) and the other component a choice of culture (1, 2 or 3 cultures), in one family we can have different combinations of language (L) plus culture (C): e.g. L1 + C2; L3 + C1, etc, depending on the intentions of the parents, their wishes, the school they have chosen. These combinations are different and they have different impact on the self-identification of the child in the future. Also, the children feel themselves differently, and so approach to their development and education must be appropriate.
\nMany of the speakers once again put emphasis on the fact that the language schools should be based on learning the language through culture, which includes both dance and song traditions, etiquette, social and cultural features of national, ethnic cuisine, art and customs, manners, etc. <\/p>\n<\/a>
\nSpecial attention was given to the topic of the administration of such schools, and issues such as the management of the organization of teachers’ work, the relationship between parents, students and teachers. It was highlighted that without the basic understanding of the above specifics, and the fact that such ethnic school are primarily run by volunteers, the success of such schools would not be possible.
\nDr. Maria Gindidis (Monash University) has conducted a scientific study of the long-term characteristics of the work of these schools, and the results were striking. The primary importance was placed on the previously factor which was not even considered previously – desire and initiative. Based on psychology and the social sciences, the desire and motivation are two determining factors on which the whole system rests. Of course, the professionalism of teachers is very important and a perfect combination would comprise professionalism, initiative, love of community work and local culture. All of us – teachers, parents and leaders of these schools know how difficult it is to instil and keep up the interest in the language development in our children. Therefore, ethnic schools should not focus only on the academic teaching of a second language and disciplines. Some ethnic schools have chosen model of “school holiday”, for example, as the Greek school in Sydney, which has few months waiting list, and each of its school day is like a holiday. Other schools in accordance with the culture of the country (mostly Asian) selected the “school – family” or “school-spirituality”, or even “school sports”, “school-theatre” format.
\nAll these models have potential for success. Our school Mosaica in Perth, I would say, seeks to combine several directions. As a result, we have a format of “language school culture-holiday-family” where almost every Saturday we have theme days, sometimes we have \u201cvisits\u201d from some fairy-tale characters, parents too dress up in costumes and whole families get involved in the events, parades, festivals and so on …
\nLearning a second language at any level is a colossal development of thought processes, involving and developing more parts of the child’s brain, contributing to the more dynamic overall development. What parent does not want their child to think fast, be able to quickly switch their attention, be balanced in their development and, of course, be able to speak two or even three languages!
\nAt the stand of Dr. Maria Gindidis, I particularly liked the many suggestions and ideas to combine learning technologies, and was encouraged that many of the things suggested we already use at our centre.
\nIt was interesting to hear a call to all the teachers of ethnic schools: “In this environment, all teachers without exception constantly learn themselves – both professionals and experienced practitioners,” – and this is true! We need to keep the attention and motivate children at every moment and we learn from them how they want to receive the information, what are they ready to absorb, and the volume of it. At the same time, the teacher must plan their lessons based on physiological characteristics, such as how long the child’s brain is ready to work with a second language to have a real effect (to a certain age, it is only 10-12 minutes a lesson!).
\nAccording to Dr. Maria Gindidis, children’s education and the ongoing teacher\u2019s development are occurring in parallel, and any useful findings have value. However, all of this is only possible when the teacher in really interested and motivated. I think the parents of children should remember this. After all, we are very fortunate that in our Russian-speaking community in Perth for example, there are people who are willing and able to teach our kids. They give their time, their skills, and most importantly their love, in order to maintain dynamic and comprehensive development of children, and preserving our cultural and linguistic heritage. I am taking this opportunity to say a big \u201cThank You\u201d once again to all the teachers of our Russian ethnic schools in Australia for their work!
\nSuch conferences are important and very effective, as we are always interested in experience of other schools across the country. These meetings give a great boost of energy to work further!
